Fluteblog

I am a flutist and flute teacher from Bergen, Norway. This is where I post personal and random stuff which has a flutist or musical context to it.

Practise practise practise…

Picking up the flute after a “vacation” is ALWAYS a reminder of why one should practise every day.

Remember:

One day without practise- YOU will hear the difference.

Three days without practise- YOUR FAMILY will hear the difference.

Improvisation from Sonata, Op. 18 by Richard Strauss - Paula Robison (flute) and Jeremy Denk (piano).

Ps. Don`t forget her book “The Paula Robison Flute Warmup Book”.

Denis Bouriakov (Principal Flute of the Metropolitan Opera in NY) playing F. Schubert - Sonata in A minor.

Todays photo Improvising (composing in the moment) is a great way to explore your instrument and your musicality. And it`s fun as well! Sometimes I take the time to find an image from one of my contacts on flickr, and use it as inspiration for my playing. I always try to make my interpretation as beautiful and interesting as possible. View high resolution

Some days

the music is there. I feel like I can just tap into it, interact with it, feel it, shape it, become it… These are the easy days. Other days, it is distant and hard to find. These days I need to find the right focus. These are the days I need to sharpen both mind and body.

Master class by Paul Tortelier - Cellist

It is much to learn about music here. Even if you are a flutist like me.

It is like Tortelier says. We musicians have to be a singer, dancer (for the rhythm), storyteller, architect (for the form) sculptor, poet, painter, thinker, missionary and Athlete.

This is the first of the twelve parts.

We never sound like the instrument.

We sound like the player. Musicians will sound different playing the same instrument. That’s why you have to explore your sound!

The “Play With a Pro”, Emmanuel Pahud, is just brilliant! It has an amazing interview, a “Flute fundamentals” teaching class and masterclasses with one of the top flutists in the world. He has so much to teach and is also a huge inspirational source! View high resolution
